Chemistry Summer Math Review

Summer is upon us and our math skills are critical to sustain until the fall semester. There is often times math in science which makes doing math preparation even more critical. Below is a step by step review of solving for a single variable.

I like to promote solving a single variable because it is the most useful skill when practicing math in the sciences. Sometimes science makes the variable bring clarity to what variables mean. And through experimentation the goal of finding a missing variable and the practice of critically thinking through formulas.

With it being summer and the sun running hot, producing alot of heat, I am presenting a gas law problem solving for a missing variable. The gas law we will review is Boyle’s Law (P1V1 = P2V2). Boyles Law observes the relationship between pressure and volume, pressure and volume are indirectly proportional. Therefore if the pressure goes up, the volume will go down, and if the volume goes up, the pressure goes down.
