Is Air Matter? Demo

Properties of matter is one of the most important foundation topics in chemistry. These foundational principles really set the tone of chemistry concepts in more complex topics. This demo was a good way to start on demonstrations with students and to allow for them to create a visual of what they think particle movement looks like.

Materials: Plastic Water Bottle, Dish Soap, 2 500 mL beakers, Hot Water, Ice Water

Instructions:

1. Fill 2 mL beakers with 200-300 mL of water,
2. in one beaker place ice, the other beaker place on a hot plate until water is steaming
3. Place dish soap into watch glass. Dip the water bottle into the soap and create a thin film over the mouth of the bottle.
4. Place the bottle over the warm bottle and observe
5. Place the bottle in the cold water and observe
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5
