Acceleration is a fun topic to explore following velocity, because of the connection to cars. It also allows student to make simple algebraic equations to solve the problems. In a fun use of a childhood toy, hotwheels, we can explore the principles of acceleration and enhance graphing techniques. This acceleration lab allows for students to be able to connect the importance of time intervals and being specific with gathering measurements.
Below is a video displaying some the the student rollercoasters made during the activity.
Instructions:
- Create a track 100 cm long
- Place meter stick next to track
- Students record car move down the track
- Students plot the distance the car moved per second along the track
The students were able to understand frame by frame of the track and create a graphed image of their data. The use of hotwheels allowed for time for play, which was the best part of the mini lab activity.
