Summer is a great time to begin to prepare for courses in the fall. It is also a good practice to feel time when it feels like it is slow. I composed a list of six practices that are great to prepare for math in the fall, refresh our knowledge, and to get ahead of upcoming courses. These skills are useful for any student in Algebra.
- Multiplication – Practicing Multiplication facts 1-12 is essential for keeping up with coursework. The more familiar the better as problems can begin to become more time consuming and contain multiple steps in Algebra.
- Solving Single Variables – Algebra is solving for variables and graphing those variables. We often times solve for missing variables in daily routines like grocery shopping or dealing cards in a game. Taking time to practice solving single variables will properl math skills when it is time o take the course.
- P.E.M.D.A.S. – Knowing the order of operations for solving problems is essential to being able to get through multi-step problems efficiently. This is one of the first skills reviewed in traditional Algebra courses.

4. Mental Math – Being able to complete problems of mental math is also a tool that is beneficial to excel in algebra. Practicing not using a calculator and using math facts and rounding is great practice for when taking exams that do not allow calculators.
5. Math Games – Practicing math by playing games is also a fun way to practice math. Board Games like monopoly or online websites such as mathplayground.com are fun for refreshing basic math concepts and practicing mental math
6. Math Vids – Resources such as youtube or khan academy provide lessons for whole subjects. It is good to make yourself familiar with some of those concepts.
