As a classroom teacher and a tutor, one of my favorite questions to ask a student when first meeting them is, “How do you study?” Students often tell me they utilize some sort of online platform. Quizlet or flash cards, other methods that have consistent repetition.

This is an excellent practice but a variety of study material is really how students begin to excel. Below I’ve inserted some practices that I’ve noticed help get students are hurdles they are struggling with when studying. These study tools I also use myself.

  • Homework Practice – Complete practice problems two times before exams or quizzes. This helps get an idea of what material is most complex and the questions your teachers / professors are likely to ask, the numbers and other variables may be changed but the concept is best practiced with prablems already provided by the instructor.
  • Quiz Review – If a previous quiz was given. Student could re-try quiz problems, preferrably those that were most difficult. And make sure the complex concepts are understood well.
  • Notecards – Creating notecards for multiplication helps increase memorization of multiplication. Students can also use notecards for spelling and vocabulary. This is one of my favorite tools for Social Sciences, English, and Biology.
